Position Summary

This position will manage the accounting operations and financial control systems, processes and procedures to support the efforts of ICANN, and manage all processes in support of proper recording of accounts payable, accounts receivable and general ledger activity. The Accounting Manager is responsible for daily management and improving ICANN’s primary accounting systems and processes in support of departments, programs and projects.  This position requires an in-depth knowledge of nonprofit accounting, and a measure of creativity to ensure that the finance team actively facilitates the operations of ICANN. This position manages the Accounts Payable, General Ledger, and Payroll functions and related staff.

 

Key Responsibilities:


Ensure that all accounting transactions are properly recorded in ICANN’s internal and external financial statements in accordance with GAAP for Nonprofit Organizations.
•    Manage the day-to-day activities of the department, including coordination of staff work assignments in the areas of Accounts Payable and the General Ledger.
•    Preparation and/or review and approval of entries to general ledger accounts
•    Manage accounting analyses of balance sheet and P&L transactions.
•    Regularly assess the adequacy of accounting policies and procedures and the related controls supporting the preparation and reporting of the Institutes financial statements.
•    Manage the month end closing cycle as per the closing calendar and due dates
•    Use judgment and strong professional skills to evaluate ICANN’s accounting practices and procedures for preparation of accounting records and reporting, consistent with GAAP, best practices and the policies of the Company.
•    Analyze new accounting pronouncements and proposed tax revisions, develops and communicates recommendations.
•    Provide functional expertise and guidance to staff for accounting systems and software applications.  
•    Review, research and document complex accounting transactions, propose accounting treatments as new accounting rules are issued or ICANN’s needs change, and provide guidance to less experienced staff on appropriate accounting treatments.
•    Responsible for preparation and filing of statutory requirements, or legal entity accounting including taxes
•    Responsible for preparation of interim and year-end audit schedules.
•    Responsible for all tax filings such as sales tax filing and payment, and tax filings.
•    Perform, direct and oversee the annual Form 990 tax return and all associated schedules
•    Responsible for analysis of financial statement trends and analytics
•    Prepares responses for internal and external audit recommendations/comments.
•    Participate in the management, implementation and maintenance of software systems to ensure the ongoing business process requirements for those systems are performed.
•    Experience with Cash Management and Fixed Asset Accounting
•    Responsible for preparing process documentation and updating teams on new accounting procedures.
•    Significant interaction with department managers and employee as it relates to accounting matters.
•    Partner with the Financial Planning and Analysis team and the Procurement team to ensure correct recording of Accounting transactions and procures.
•    Review contracts, purchase orders, and invoices for accuracy based on GAAP, best practices, and established policies and procedures.
•    Manage general ledger accounts including review of all month-end close journal entries and supporting work paper reconciliations
•    Propose and review the appropriate accounting treatment as it relates to content cost capitalization, amortization and impairments
•    Raise potential issues with Controller as necessary, and provide direction to accounting staff on the procedures for review of invoices, and work papers
•    Coordinate annual and interim financial audits by working closely with outside audit firm
•    Manage accounting staff and supervise complex accounting projects.  Apply a broad knowledge of accounting rules, practices and procedures to manage accounting tasks.
•    Manage the performance of team members through regular feedback, coaching, motivation and support, training, formal performance appraisals and working as appropriate to address team member needs to promote staff retention
•    Plan for staffing needs and perform hiring for the accounting department.  
•    Provide mentoring, guidance and training to develop the accounting staff.  
•    Sets specific performance goals for each team member in collaboration with Controller.
•    Promotes a team environment and provides work direction and guidance including coaching, professional development, and training for the team.
•    Other Finance related projects as required

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):


•    Ability to develop and improve a strong team within Finance.
•    Strong GAAP accounting required
•    Experience with ERP Financial Systems and Oracle Fusion a plus.
•    Experience with ERP Financial Systems implementation or enhancement projects a plus
•    High level of proficiency using MS Excel
•    High level of proficiency in other MS Office products
•    Experience in not-for-profit accounting a plus
•    Experience evaluating and updating accounting practices with a focus on documentation of procedures and internal controls
•    Excellent listening, written and verbal communication skills.
•    Able to work independently, demonstrate good personal judgment and exercise a commitment to ethical conduct.

Education and Experience Requirements:


•    Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or a related field from an accredited institution required
•    CPA is highly preferred
•    At least 8 years of overall accounting experience required
•    5-7 years of experience in project-based cost accounting environment, including environments with multiple service centers and overhead rates.
•    5-7 years of experience coordinating audits and tax work with outside accountants
•    3-5 years of experience managing accounting staff
