The Library Director provides leadership, planning, and administration of the Casper College Goodstein Foundation Library programs and services in support of the instructional programs of Casper College. The Library Director has principal authority over library programs and works under the general direction of the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs.


Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Director of the Goodstein Foundation Library:

  • Develops library initiatives that enhance student learning.
  • Directs integration of appropriate technologies into services
  • Fosters forward-looking collection development plans that support accreditation
  • Leads all aspects of library administration (including long term planning, budget development and control, outreach, personnel selection, facilities management, effective stewardship, and ongoing assessment of library resources).
  • Maintains and strengthens collaborative efforts with consortia and other resource sharing groups (Wyoming Community Colleges Library Directors’ Group, WYLD Network, University of Wyoming at Casper, and the Wyoming State Library).
  • Nurtures an organizational culture of collegiality and service within the library and on campus.
  • Provides strategic vision and leadership for the library, faculty and staff coordinating with the College’s mission.
  • Serves on campus committees and acts as the library’s liaison to senior college administrators.
  • Supervises librarians, professional staff, and student workers.
Essential Duties:
  • Collect and retain essential data required by state, regional, federal, and other accreditation agencies.
  • Demonstrate continuing professional development. Actively contributes to state or national professional associations.  Serves on college, regional, and national committees as needed.
  • Develop:
    • plans and procedures for acquiring, maintaining, and deselecting library materials in all formats.
    • policies and procedures for operation of the library.
    • strong partnerships within the college. Advocate for the library. Collaborate with campus constituents to assess, provide and improve library services to meet campus needs.  
  • Ensure that librarian and staff workflows and related processes are effective, efficient, and current.
  • Implement methods to assess the collections to ensure that college-wide, campus, and program specific needs are defined and met.
  • Inform administration of the library’s strengths and weaknesses in meeting college needs and accreditation standards.
  • Maintain an effective combination of print, media, and electronic information resources.
  • Oversee the physical and virtual library space and ensures that spaces, fixtures, furniture, and technologies are prepared to meet the needs of a 21st Century college library.
  • Plan and:
    • supervise the assessment of all library resources and services for student learning and faculty effectiveness.
    • implement and administer all library resources and services for students, faculty and staff wherever classes are taught, in the context of continuous improvement.
    • manage an annual budget that is derived from several funding sources.
  • Provide vision and strategic direction for library services in alignment with the College’s mission and core themes.
  • Supervise and develop knowledgeable librarians and staff through continuous professional development.
  • Work collaboratively with the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, vice presidents, college deans, college governance committees and college departments concerning library programs and services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Work Environment:

Typical work environment is an office setting requiring normal safety precautions. Interaction with the public will be required as the College Library is a public service. Short periods of time will be spent outdoors traveling between campus buildings in various weather conditions. Work is usually performed during the normal workday however, early morning; late evening and weekend work may be required during periods of critical attendance to meet the peak periods related to position responsibilities and requirements of the Casper College Library.

Physical Demands:

Employee is regularly required to sit and stand for long periods of time, speak, hear, use hands and fingers to handle materials and use computer, feel, and reach with hands and arms. Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds may be required. Less frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds may be required (office supplies, books, paper boxes, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications:
  • A Master’s degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited program.
  • A minimum of five years progressively responsible managerial experience in a higher education library setting.
  • Demonstrated successful leadership, interpersonal and supervisory skills working with a diverse population.
  • Effective problem solving, analytical and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a rapidly changing environment
  • Experience with preparation and management of six figure operational budgets
  • Understanding of the priorities and interdependencies of public services and technical services
  • Knowledge and experience with automated, integrated library, information and instructional technologies
  • Knowledge of copyright laws as they apply to the operation of an academic library.
  • Committed understanding of the open enrollment community college mission.
  • Excellent skills in collaborative resolution of faculty, staff, administration, and community demands.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Ten years progressively responsible managerial experience in a higher education library setting.
  • Successful experience supporting higher education specialized and regional accreditation processes.
  • Experience leading strategic planning.
  • Experience leading facilities development planning.
  • Experience working collaboratively with academic library consortia.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with groups and individuals outside of the library.
