WSP is currently seeking a temporary full-time (15-month contract with possibility of extension) Controller to join our Finance Department. This manager role requires a hands-on finance professional with excellent project and operations financial accounting expertise. A successful candidate must also have a strong results and actions driven mentality and be an effective communicator with senior management.  

 

Reporting to the Finance Director, this role will support the Energy, Resource & Industrial (ERI) Business Line, and will be working at our Fifth Avenue Place office in Calgary.  

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee day-to-day activities to ensure efficiency and accuracy on important finance operations, including but not limited to proper project revenue and cost recognition, timely billing and cash collections
  • Responsible for monthly operational results closing, including identifying and recording cost/revenue accruals and provisions, project and operational KPIs validation and variance analysis
  • Drive weekly, monthly and quarterly forecasting and annual budgeting exercises on operational financials; validate/challenge finance and operational leaders on assumptions and logics to ensure reasonableness
  • Lead quarterly project reviews with Project Mangers on ETC and percentage of completion to warrant proper revenue recognition, explain and document variances and record necessary revenue adjustments
  • Ensure compliance to IFRS standards, policies, processes and controls for all accounting activities 
  • Design and create financial models for analysis and forecasting purposes, continuous enhancement on existing tools and reports 
  • Develop and implement processes, procedures and systems that improve financial operations
  • Act as a dependable business partner to operations senior leaders in various departments; provide financial perspective/insights on cross-function discussions and initiatives, actively involve in pricing development on proposals and MSAs (collaborate with the Business Development team), organize necessary training on key operational finance concepts and metrics
  • Manage task distribution and team workload to achieve optimal performance
  • Train direct reports on key policies, processes, concepts, and empower team members on finding innovative solutions on challenges
  • Evaluate performance on direct reports, grow and develop staff through coaching and timely and constructive feedback   
  • Collaborate with members from the corporate statutory accounting, FP&A and other operations finance teams on various finance projects
  • Perform miscellaneous ad hoc tasks, reports and analysis as requested by senior management
 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • University degree in accounting/business or post-secondary equivalent, CPA or equivalent
  • Minimum of 5-8 years experience in project and financial accounting, forecasting/budgeting, financial modeling with increasing levels of responsibility
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, ability to interact at all levels and speak well about financial terms and concepts to non-finance audiences 
  • Experience in staff supervision and training, including planning, scheduling and prioritizing work assignments, and cultivating a cohesive high-performing work environment
  • Highly energetic, agile and adaptable to an evolving organization with an action-driven mindset
  • Analytical, resourceful, ability to ask the right and/or hard questions to drive solutions and performance
  • Attentive to details and well organized, meticulous at documentation and records keeping
  • Strong conflict resolution capabilities, finding mutually beneficial solutions and leading through influence to foster relationships
  • Skillful at problem-solving, decision-making, and respond well to situations with high level of uncertainties and ambiguities  
  • Advanced competency level in Excel, capable of reverse engineering to decipher complex workbooks and quickly learning/applying new functions and features
  • Experience in the energy sector is an asset
  • Experience in Deltek system is an asset
  • Experience with large data, information system data flow and programming is an asset
