ABOUT THE POSITION: The Grants Accountant works with over $15 million in annual revenue consisting of government grants, program & rental income, and contributions. Monthly activities include revenue recognition, billing, and collection for the agency’s government grant portfolio, recording rental revenue, and cash receipts from donors and partners. This position will coordinate closely with Compass staff (Program Managers, Property Managers, Development, and Compliance), as well as external contract monitors. The Grants Accountant will also assist in other general accounting activities to include the preparation of the annual operating budget, general ledger reconciliations, support of the annual audit process, and other duties as assigned.

LOCATION: Headquarters in Pioneer Square - Seattle, WA

REPORTS TO: Senior Accountant


SCHEDULE: Days Monday-Friday

SALARY RANGE: DOE and within Compass ranges

Grant Contract Accounting

  • Support Controller and Senior Accountant on monthly grant accounting, invoicing, and collection.

  • Work with Compliance Manager to activate, monitor, and close out contracts in the accounting system.

  • Review grant agreements and associated documents pertaining to allowable costs, with a special emphasis on federal guidelines.

  • Maintain general ledger contract codes to accurately reflect grant agreements.

  • Provide completed cost reimbursement invoices including schedule support as required by specific grant/contract.

  • Review year-to-date, invoiced amounts and flag any issues that could result in unused grant funds.

  • Monitor compliance with grant invoice submission deadlines and organization policies for record retention.

  • Prepare entry in A/R sub ledger for all grant invoices.

  • Post payments received from funders to AR; investigate differences; work with appropriate staff to resolve issues.

  • Coordinate grant billing in programs with multiple grants to comply with guidelines and organization policy.

  • Assist the Controller and Senior Accountant with reporting for statement audits and funder monitoring visits.  

  • Analyze and explain budget variances.

Accounts Receivable and General Ledger Accounting

  • Perform monthly entry of non-grant program income from various sources.

  • Record gross potential rent for relevant programs from sub ledger and post adjustments.

  • Invoice and record revenue for various rental and contractual agreements including employees, condo members, commercial tenants, property management clients.

  • Post cash receipts from deposit slips, wire notices and bank statements to the accounting system.

  • Work with Fund Development Department to reconcile donor and accounting database revenue.

  • Prepare monthly import of third-party property management accounting records into the MIP accounting system.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply accounting theory, generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), and principles of sound internal control.

  • Above-average proficiency in the use of accounting software, preferably Abila/MIP, Boston Post and in Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities with the ability to respond to change in a productive manner.

  • Above average analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Ability to work independently, with limited supervision as well as part of a team.

  • Ability to follow and administer organization’s policies and procedures.

  • Sensitive to and able to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse economic circumstances, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, physical and mental abilities, and sexual orientation.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with ability to communicate effectively about technical problems and solutions. Strong problem solving, time and project management skills are required to be successful in this role.

  • Ability and aptitude with technology necessary for successful day-to-day functioning in business environment including various databases, Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Outlook, etc., and Internet technology.


  • A bachelor’s degree is strongly desired, in accounting or related field. Or relevant work experience, certificate and/or equivalent continuing professional development or education.

  • Three to five years demonstrated experience with accounting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, required. 

  • Work experience with Abila/MIP accounting software and Boston Post, desired.

  • Familiarity with issues of homelessness, mental illness, substance abuse, sexual assault, and/or domestic violence, desired.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.

  • The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, type, and reach with hands and arms; and requires the ability to occasionally push, pull, lift and/or carry supplies up to 20 pounds.

  • Work takes place in a social services environment where long periods of sitting, working on a computer, walking to various work areas, going up and down stairs, and standing are required.

  • Travel to program sites and meetings outside the office and around the county are necessary.

Mental efforts like attention to detail, interacting with others in-person and through email, using critical thinking skills to strategize, develop and implement business plans, create and edit documents, listen and participate verbally at meetings.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is normal. Compass programs are housed within a human services environment in the Greater Seattle area. Our diverse tenant community includes many single, formerly homeless adults who lack any family support system. Compounding the constraints of poverty, our client community includes the physically and mentally disabled, persons living with AIDS, those who struggle with chemical dependencies, veterans, and vulnerable, elderly adults. Working at Compass will mean that you will be in close proximity to the people we serve. This position is not eligible for remote work, it requires onsite work only.
