Position Summary:

The Department of Biological Sciences at Arkansas State University-Jonesboro is seeking applicants for a full-time, tenure-track position in environmental science / phycology at the Assistant Professor level, commencing in the Fall of 2019.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the teaching, research, and service of the department, which currently has approx. 500 undergraduate majors and 50 graduate students.
  • Moreover, involvement with the graduate programs (MS and Ph.D.) of Environmental Science and/or Molecular Biosciences is expected.
  • Will develop an independent and externally funded research program involving algal research in freshwater or freshwater and marine environments with an emphasis on applied questions involving pollution of waterways, impacts of climate and/or land-use change.
  • Existing undergraduate courses for which the candidate may participate include:
  • Environmental Biology and Lab, Ecology, and Biology of Plants. 
  • Graduate courses include Environmental Systems Analysis and Lab.  Other courses may be developed in the candidate’s area of expertise and based on needs in the department.
  • Faculty work load includes teaching, research, creative activity, service, and professional development in the best interest of the students and community at large.
  • All faculty members are expected to assume student academic advisement responsibilities in addition to their regular teaching loads.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Demonstrated understanding of algal ecology (broadly defined) in freshwater or freshwater and marine environments, including applied ecology involving pollution of waterways, impacts of climate and/or land-use change. Skilled teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in areas of environmental biology, ecology, botany, and data analysis is also of interest.

In addition to the successful candidate’s independent research program, several avenues for collaborative research at Arkansas State University are available with faculty of the department of Biological Sciences, the Arkansas Biosciences Institute, the Ecotoxicology Research Facility, and the Arkansas Center for Biodiversity Collections.

Minimum Qualifications:

An earned Doctorate or equivalent terminal degree appropriate for the discipline and professional experience appropriate to the discipline is required.
