About FirstLine Schools

In 1998, FirstLine Schools started the first charter school in New Orleans. FirstLine now operates four K-8th grade schools and a high school.  Our mission is to create and inspire great open admissions public schools in New Orleans. We do this by:

About Special Education Leader Fellowship:

Special Education Leader Fellowship (SELF) aims to improve the quality of special education student outcomes by developing current and aspiring special education leaders and RTI coordinators through a uniquely designed 2-year Fellowship. The Fellowship provides formal training sessions, leadership coaching, professional learning communities, peer program reviews and visits to exemplary programs across the country. In doing so, SELF accelerates the development of these middle leaders to create outstanding special education programming in schools. SELF is a FirstLine program.


Position Summary:

The Leadership Coach is responsible for the Fellows’ professional development to improve special education programming in their schools. Additionally, the Leadership Coach provides individualized support to Fellows in order to embed the skills necessary for success into the daily practice of Fellows and their teams. As a SELF team member, the leadership coach embodies the SELF values of Belief, Responsibility, and Teamwork.


Position Responsibilities:

Coaching Fellows:

  • Provide direct coaching, resources, and problem solving support to Fellows

  • Work with Fellows and their principals to create strategic plans to improve their school’s special education program

  • Integrate program learning experiences (training sessions, Peer Program Reviews, National School Visits, and

  • Critical Friends groups) with the practical work of the Fellowship

  • Conduct school visits to observe Fellows at work, ensure the high-quality of the Fellowship experience, and assess the progress of each Fellow against the SELF Framework.


Supporting and delivering programming:

  • Support SELF’s Director of Training to ensure the planning and delivery of high-quality programming across the

  • Fellowship experience

  • Provide consultative support to school leaders of participating fellows

  • Plan and lead professional development training sessions based on best practices in adult learning

  • Attend and participate in all of the Principal/Fellow Training Sessions, Summer Experience Week, Peer Program

  • Reviews, and National School Visits.


Special Education School Reviews

  • Lead special education school reviews

  • Work with the Director of Training on the on-going refinement of the school review process and rubric.


General Leadership and Support

  • Assist the Program Manager with the recruitment and selection of future fellows

  • Build a sense of community within the cohort by supporting and protecting SELF values

  • Participate as a member of the program team in the on-going development and improvement of the program.

SELF Leadership Coaches are experienced, successful special education leaders who are dedicated to the SELF mission. The successful candidate will possess a combination of passion, experience, and effectiveness.

Additional qualifications include:

  • A demonstrated record of improving student outcomes as a special education practitioner or as a supporting principal

  • A dedication to sharing insights and experiences with other educators and special education leaders

  • Experience in leading and advising colleagues, including teachers and administrators

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills

  • Attention to detail

  • Believe in every student’s ability to achieve their potential

  • Achieve outstanding results based on agreed-upon expectations

  • Take personal responsibility for challenges

  • Share a commitment to creating great schools in New Orleans
