Position Summary:


FirstLine Schools is currently looking for talented, passionate Relay Residents at our K-8 schools. Rather than carrying a full classroom load on their own, Residents spend the year developing their teaching practice through a variety of planning and teaching responsibilities and professional development opportunities through their resident advisor.


Relay residency details:


In the first year of the Residency, participants will be hired to work full time as Residents at a FirstLine school where they will help increase student achievement and maintain and support school-level systems. Residents will receive weekly Deliberate Practice sessions from Relay GSE’s expert faculty and additional training in proven, powerful teaching techniques. Gradually, over the course of the first academic year, Residents will take on more teaching responsibilities as their skills and confidence develop. After their first year in the program, Residents will be prepared to transition into a full-time teaching position a FirstLine campus in their second year should a role be available. Residents will continue to receive coaching and support as they serve as the teacher of record.


Throughout the two-year program, Residents will be enrolled as graduate students at Relay GSE and will take master’s-level courses that complement their roles as new teachers. Relay GSE’s curriculum is designed to teach new educators how to manifest high academic expectations, and develop rigorous, data-driven lessons while caring deeply for their students. The Relay GSE Teaching Residency will lead to a culminating understanding of what it means – and what it takes – to be an effective classroom teacher.


Successful graduates of the Residency will receive their teaching certification (after year 1) and master’s degree (after year 2) from Relay GSE. Upon completion, Residents will be able to demonstrate pedagogical mastery and have a clear pathway into a job, after receiving a full-time salary and benefits for the duration of the program.


In summary residents receive:


  • A Master of Arts in Teaching from Relay GSE , an innovative program focused on educational theory and practice-based teaching methods and new educator support;

  • A Louisiana Level 1   teaching certificate

  • Full-time salary and benefits  for two years, with a pathway into hiring after graduation; (Note that if a lead teaching role is available in year 2, residents will see a substantial increase in salary due to the role change from resident to lead teacher)

  • Employer contribution towards tuition

  • Extensive weekly training  and deliberate practice sessions in proven, highly-effective teaching techniques;

  • A residency year  , allowing Residents an opportunity to engage with expert teachers and best practices, while on a structured and promising pathway into a teaching job;

  • Access to a network  of veteran New Orleans and Relay GSE teachers, new teacher colleagues and professionals;


Key Responsibilities of Residents:


Residents Will:

  • Lead students small or whole group starting on the first day with the mentorship of an experienced lead teacher

  • Co-teach with the mentorship of an experienced lead teacher

  • Be placed in a classroom where they can observe modelling of effective teaching strategies on a daily basis

  • Complete Relay GSE coursework, take graduate school classes and pass all 5 Gateways. Gateways are benchmark assessments that Residents must pass to progress in the program

  • Apply to Relay and FirstLine will pay their tuition once the AmeriCorps award is applied to their tuition


Eligibility Requirements for Residents:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree conferred by July 1, 2017

  • Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale

  • Applicants with a GPA lower than a 3.0 but at least a 2.75, may be considered for admission by submitting an additional letter of recommendation

  • Passing Praxis I and II scores by August 1, 2017

  • US Citizen or permanent resident status

Physical Requirements:


  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit, walk, stand, talk, and hear.

  • Light lifting of equipment may be required (up to 20 lbs.)
