In 1998, FirstLine Schools started the first charter school in New Orleans, which became the highest performing open admission middle school in the city.  FirstLine now operates four K-8th grade schools and a high school.   Our mission is to create and inspire great open admissions public schools in New Orleans.  We do this by:

About Edible Schoolyard New Orleans  (ESYNOLA)

Founded in 2006, Edible Schoolyard New Orleans (ESYNOLA) envisions generations of New Orleans children who have healthy relationships with food, the natural world, themselves, and their community.   ESYNOLA's mission is to teach  children to make healthy connections through food.

Position Summary:

The Development Assistant assists with donor prospecting, development, stewardship, reporting and database records for FirstLine Schools and its signature program Edible Schoolyard New Orleans.    Part-time, hourly position (approximately 24 hours/week).

Position Responsibilities:

The position’s specific responsibilities include:


  • Manage organizational giving structure (campaigns, funds, appeals)  throughout Raisers Edge database

  • Track FirstLine/ESYNOLA income and process all manual and online gifts

  • Assist with integration of Financial Edge and Raisers Edge

  • Create and run regular income reports for FLS Development Team


  • Conduct prospect research, analyze donor giving history

  • Work closely with development managers on coordinating all aspects of fundraising events and opportunities, including FLS’s biannual bus tour, “An Edible Evening,” GiveNOLA Day, special dinners, and other donor cultivation events.

  • Write grants, solicitation letters for funding opportunities under $5,000

  • Ensure that all communication with prospective and current funders is professional, accurate, and meets deadlines, including grant proposals, thank you letters, corporate solicitation packets, and reports to funders

  • Support external communications (i.e. press releases, quarterly newsletters, holiday cards, programmatic highlights and special campaigns, donor gift deliveries)

Education & Experience:

  1. Minimum BA/BS degree  highly desired, background in information systems, communications, fundraising and special events coordination preferred.

  2. At least one year’s experience in nonprofit development, or business administration, is highly desired.

  3. Experience with online donor records management database required. Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge preferred.

  4. Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as superior organizational skills.

  5. Ability to improve various administrative systems and procedures.

  6. Strong computer skills required, including experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and proficiency in use of Google Docs and Google Sheets

  7. Demonstrated excellence in communication skills through at least one writing sample.

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit, walk, stand, talk, and hear.

  •  Light lifting of equipment may be required (up to 20 lbs.)
