In 1998, FirstLine Schools started the first charter school in New Orleans.  FirstLine now operates four K-8th grade schools and a high school.   Our mission is to create and inspire great open admissions public schools in New Orleans. We do this by:

Position Summary

 

The chief financial officer will lead the network finance team and provide financial and operational leadership. The CFO will ensure the finance department has strong systems and policies and that these systems and policies are continuously reviewed and improved. The CFO will train and develop staff at schools and the network to understand the budgeting process and all financial and accounting processes.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Organizational Leadership

  • Work with the network leadership team and board on strategic financial planning, analysis and business modeling

  • Lead, performance manage and set goals for the finance team to create processes and procedures that empower schools and the FirstLine network with the information they need to make effective and financially responsible decisions

  • Oversee the finance team and its management of financial transactions, including accounts payable, receivables, grants, banking, investments and payroll functions

  • Participate on the executive team as a leader regarding the financial impact of academic, operational, human resource decisions, and future growth plans

 

Financial leadership

  • Maintain and update fiscal calendar for all reporting deadlines including, but not limited to, audit schedule, tax reporting, initiation of annual budget process and monthly close dates

  • Perform ongoing analysis and develop replicable processes and systems that ensure FirstLine Schools’ financial health including setting and tracking multi-year goals for fiscal health

  • Review and update Financial Policies and Procedures Manual, ensuring procedures are routinely checked to ensure compliance with the written policy

  • Identify and implement ways  FirstLine Schools can improve fiscal effectiveness and efficiency, including researching and implementing technology upgrades to better support budget management, accounts payable, reporting and revenue recognition

  • Manage the development of an annual budget, budget projections for strategic planning, as well as separate budgets for each school campus and the network team

  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of FirstLine’s reports, including operating budget, budget to actuals, cash flow, capital expenditures and annual payroll

  • Manage and execute year-end audits for all schools, and work with external auditor to ensure clean financial audits

  • Support network and school staff to ensure all financial and accounting functions are completed in a timely and accurate manner:

    • Month-end close (credit cards, bank statements, payroll)

    • Payroll, benefits administration

    • Cash management

    • Accounts receivable, accounts payable, bank reconciliations and other accounting  tasks

    • Monthly financial reports

 

Reporting and analysis

  • Report and analyze all financial statements, including statement of activities, fund balance, sources/uses of funds and other management reports to all stakeholders

  • Regularly deliver timely reports to the CEO, COO, school leaders, school operations managers, department heads, board finance committee, board, Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) and other partners

  • Responsible for all federal, state, local and Louisiana Department of Education financial regulatory reporting

  • Review and analyze monthly income statement, balance sheet, cash flow and budget vs. actual variance report for all schools

 

Training and development

  • Ensure the management team and the finance committee of the board have a comprehensive understanding of FirstLine’s reports, including operating budget, capital expenditures and annual payroll

  • Work with the school leadership team (school leader and school operations manager) on strategic financial planning, analysis and financial modeling

  • Lead and support school leaders and school operations managers (SOMs) through the budgeting processes

  • Lead the training of SOMs, school leaders and other staff on financial policies and procedures

Qualifications

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, with strong preference for candidates with MBA and CPA

  • Solutions-oriented with a proven record of improving systems, procedures and organizational effectiveness

  • At least five years of management work experience with organizations (budgets exceeding $10MM) as a CFO, director of finance, comptroller or equivalent

  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing a team focused on results

  • Demonstrated understanding of nonprofit and governmental accounting principles; experience with an educational organization or nonprofit strongly preferred

  • Comprehensive understanding and ability to communicate GAAP standards

  • Experience with and a comprehensive understanding of how to develop financial models for sustainability, growth and expansion

  • Familiarity with Louisiana Department of Education LAUGH Guide standards is strongly preferred

  • Proficiency in management accounting software with a strong preference for Blackbaud

  • Outstanding organizational skills and high attention to detail; outstanding written and oral communication skills

  • Extreme flexibility, with a strong work ethic and an entrepreneurial spirit to accommodate high level of responsibility and multiple priorities

  • Expert communication skills, professional demeanor with strong self-confidence and initiative

  • Ability to work effectively in a fluid environment and with a wide range of constituents, including board members, school personnel and vendors

 

Physical Requirements:

 

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit, walk, stand, talk, and hear.

  • Light lifting of equipment may be required (up to 20 lbs.)
