About FirstLine Schools

In 1998, FirstLine Schools started the first charter school in New Orleans.  FirstLine now operates four K-8th grade schools and a high school.  Our mission is to create and inspire great open admissions public schools in New Orleans. We do this by:

Position Summary:

The Director of Finance will work closely with CEO, COO and the Board Finance Committee to set and execute the organization’s overall financial strategy and controls. The Director is responsible for constantly innovating and improving the financial strategy and controls at FirstLine Schools. 

The Director of Finance is responsible for:


  • Budgeting and financial management
  • Reporting and preparation for audits
  • Grant compliance for federal, state and private grants and contracts
  • Compliance across the organization with federal, state, local and FirstLine fiscal policy
  • Finance team leadership and management


Position Responsibilities:

The Director of Finance assumes leadership and management responsibilities for the development, implementation, and on-going refinement of systems and practice in each of the areas below:

Budgeting and Financial Management


  • Leads the annual budget process and mid-year reforecasting for all schools, programs and the network office
  • Trains and supports school leaders to do school and department-based budgeting
  • Provides monthly accurate and timely financial reports and other information for the Board, school leaders and C-team
  • Manages the financial books and performs accounting data entry and record-keeping for the central network and each of the schools
  • Oversees and regularly assesses accounts payable and accounts receivable and documents general accounting, accounts receivable, cash receipts, accounts payable, and cash disbursement controls and procedures
  • Prepares or supervises monthly bank reconciliations, credit card reconciliations, and journal entries
  • Serves as liaison for annual audits as performed by external auditors, State, and IRS examiners
  • Supports the creation of annual school budgets as well as grant application budgets
  • Produces annual financial reports (AFR) as required by State law
  • Completes Federal and State grant reporting and compliance tasks
  • Manages the process of Medicaid enrollment and reimbursement
  • Ensures compliance with and reimbursement through e-rate
  • Ensures organizational compliance with its internal policies and controls manual and proposes changes as needed
  • Ensures that FirstLine is kept up-to-date on best practice audit and financial policy as well as state, local and federal laws regarding school and non-profit operations
  • Represents company to financial partners, including financial institutions, investors, auditors, and public officials
  • Oversees cash flow planning and management for FirstLine Schools
    • Including: Bank balances, investments and asset management
  • Supervises or prepares predictive models and financial analysis
  • Provides training and support to Board Finance Committee in developing short, medium, and long term financial plans and projections


Reporting and preparation for audits

  • Oversees audits and proper filing of tax returns
  • Ensures legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions

Grant compliance for federal, state and private grants and contracts

  • Manages grant and contract reporting process
  • Coordinates with grant manager and school and network leadership to ensure accurate and timely reporting

Finance team leadership and management

  • Manages and develops accountants, grant managers, accounts payable specialist and other finance office staff
  • Leads the team with clear vision and accountability

Strategic financial planning

  • Cooperates with CEO, COO, and Board to develop and maintain multi-year financial model consistent with organizational strategic plan

Other duties as assigned


Education and Experience:

  • 5+ years of non-profit/governmental accounting experience
  • Master’s preferred (especially in the fields of Business Administration and Public Administration)
  • CPA strongly preferred
  • Must have a minimum of three years of experience in a field relevant to that of a lead school business administrator. Relevant areas are accounting, finance and other areas of fiscal management

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit, walk, stand, talk, and hear.
  • Light lifting of equipment may be required (up to 20 lbs.)
