About FirstLine Schools

In 1998, FirstLine Schools started the first charter school in New Orleans. FirstLine now operates four K-8th grade schools and a high school.  Our mission is to create and inspire great open admissions public schools in New Orleans. We do this by:

Position Summary:

The Instructional Coach’s role is to support and develop teachers. The Coach may focus on specific grades of specific subjects, i.e. K-4, math, ELA.

We develop teachers at FirstLine by focusing on excellence in teaching. To do so, we coach teachers and center professional development on our Vision of Excellence in Teaching rubric the components of which include:

  • On Task (Maintaining high expectations and maximizing instructional time)
  • Essential Content (Planning effectively)
  • Cognitive Engagement (Maintaining High Academic Expectations and Building Thinking Skills)
  • Demonstration of Learning (Leading Instruction, Checking for Understanding, Responding to Student Misunderstanding)
  • Community of Learners (Establishing Expectations and Responding to Student Behaviors)


Position Responsibilities:

Teacher Development, Performance Management, and Professional Development

  • Provides targeted and specific feedback for lesson plans and classroom observations
  • Coaches teachers using FirstLine Schools’ Vision of Excellence in teaching rubric
  • Either leads or has input into performance maps for teachers, department chairs, and other relevant staff (eg. literacy interventionists, RTI coordinators, Special Education coordinators, lab monitors)
  • Assists other school leaders with appropriate planning and delivery of professional development to meet school goals

Assessment and Use of Data Learning Support

  • Analyzes data and runs data dives (frequency)
  • Provides support for teachers in analyzing student assessment data
  • Assists teachers in designing instructional decisions based on assessment data

Develop and Monitor School Goals

  • Identifies school teaching and learning needs, barriers, and weaknesses by analyzing student data, and organizes and implements problem-solving actions with teachers
  • Develops an action plan with school leaders and department chairs to meet the identified school teaching and learning needs
  • Monitors and tracks instructional effectiveness and student progress making adjustments as necessary to work towards school goals

Curriculum and Instruction

  • Works with the Academic Team to provide support re: curriculum, teacher prep day and anything else that relates to the coaches’ area of expertise
  • Leads/Co-Leads implementation of challenging and rigorous curriculum aligned with the Common Core state standards
  • Provides on-going support for staff through facilitating professional learning communities, observation/feedback, and modeling the use of appropriate strategies in relevant subjects

Literacy Assessments and Use of Data

  • Leads grade-level, vertical, and/or departmental teams in analyzing assessment data and student work to develop plans for improving subject area mastery

Other duties as assigned


Education & Experience:

  • Master’s degree
  • Extensive experience as a lead teacher in subject area
  • Experience coaching and developing teachers
  • Louisiana State Certification

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit, walk, stand, talk, and hear.
  •  Light lifting of equipment may be required (up to 20 lbs.)
