Long Range Planner

Company Overview:

Hibbing Taconite is a leading iron ore mining company which began production in 1976 and has an annual plant capacity of 8.0 million tons of iron ore. ArcelorMittal, US Steel and Cleveland-Cliffs are partners in Hibbing Taconite, with ArcelorMittal owning a majority stake.   

 

Cliffs Mining Company is the current manager of Hibbing Taconite joint venture.  In August 2019, ArcelorMittal USA will assume the role of manager and at that time Hibbing Taconite employees will join the ArcelorMittal USA Team under ArcelorMittal Hibbing Management LLC. 

 

Summary of Principal Functions: Work cross functionally to develop and improve long-range plans (5+ years) that optimize efficiency and provide cost reduction opportunities. These plans include material balances, material excavation and spoil placement sequences, water balances and reclamation plans. These activities must be accomplished while ensuring that neither safety or the environment are compromised.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create, maintain, and reconcile the annual and 5-year mine plans.
  • Optimize the annual plan to minimize haul distances and material movement.
  • Assist in reconciling the short range mine plan to the annual plans.
  • Create future striping and ore blending plans to maintain 3 ore blend ratios that will meet plant requirements.
  • Analyze and report performance against annual plan. Discuss any ongoing problems as well as recovery plans if not performing against plan. Provide recommendations for improvement and monitor any actions required to get back on plan.
  • Monitor long range projects, track data related to projects and provide feedback on progress on implementation of long range projects.
  • Manage and report current lease-hold activity in relation to annual and 5+ years plans to ensure in compliance with land leases and royalties payment.
  • Communicate any upcoming land leases required for future development to ensure land leases are developed and in place prior to utilization of land.
  • Provide maps and documents required for mine permit modifications, overseeing specialty work required to prepare those documents and continuously developing capability with the goal of minimizing the need for external specialized support.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in evaluating mine production, geological and processing data to optimize budget models and identify continuous improvement opportunities. The incumbent will report the data and evaluations to the mine management and prepare reporting documents as necessary.

 

Required Education:                           

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mining, Civil, Geological or similar degree required

 

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of mine planning.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • PE-Professional Engineer technical certification is preferred
  • Resource and Reserve reporting experience preferred
  • Mine planning/modeling software experience required (Vulcan preferred)
  • GIS experience is preferred
  • Ability to travel locally and to headquarters as needed
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to present technical information to non-technical personnel.
