Land Lease Administrator

Company Overview:

Hibbing Taconite is a leading iron ore mining company which began production in 1976 and has an annual plant capacity of 8.0 million tons of iron ore. ArcelorMittal, US Steel and Cleveland-Cliffs are partners in Hibbing Taconite, with ArcelorMittal owning a majority stake.   


Cliffs Mining Company is the current manager of Hibbing Taconite joint venture.  In August 2019, ArcelorMittal USA will assume the role of manager and at that time Hibbing Taconite employees will join the ArcelorMittal USA Team under ArcelorMittal Hibbing Management LLC. 


Summary of Principal Functions:

Execute management directives for the commercial and physical aspects of company lands related to Hibbing Taconite iron ore operations in a cost effective manner and consistent with strategic objectives.


Key Responsibilities:

·       Evaluate site needs and coordinate land acquisitions to address mining progression, including credits for wetland mitigation.

·       Classify land holdings as ‘strategic’ or ‘non-strategic’ and coordinate disposals where appropriate.

·       Administer and enforce land use licenses, easements and permits.

·       Coordinate timber management.

·       Maintain property taxes at minimum levels and pay as required without penalty or property loss.

·       Manage 80+ residential leases on company property.

·       Monitor the status of all inactive portions of Hibbing Taconite properties and cooperate, as needed, with Environmental Affairs on remediation and reclamation efforts.

  • Assist the Mining and Environmental groups by maintaining and utilizing the Geographic Information System (GIS) to develop reports, maps and projects as needed for mine development and planning activities.
  • In cooperation with legal and mine staff, coordinate verification of land ownership and leases at Hibbing Taconite operations, including maintaining land-related legal documentation in a digital format.
  • Interact regularly with other functions in the organization (legal, public and government affairs, environmental, etc.) as well as with external stakeholders (agencies, general public, etc.)
  • Provide annual and 5-year forecast for land-related costs of operations & Minnesota land budgets.


Required Education:                           

  • Bachelors of Science Degree – Land Management, Geographic Information Systems, Geology, Mine Engineering, Forestry, Economics, Environmental Science, Conservation, or equivalent degree.


Required Experience:

  • 2-5 years’ experience in mining, real estate, property management, or land ownership (title) research and/or surveying and knowledgeable with ArcGIS, and databases.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to present technical information to non-technical personnel.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to travel locally and to headquarters as needed
