Job Title:  Project Accountant

Reports to: Controller

General Summary:

The Project Accountant is responsible for providing all accounting functions and job administration tasks for assigned jobs. The Project Accountant will assist the Project Managers and others with an understanding of project financial status as well as ensure adequate internal controls are implemented and practiced at all levels within the project. The Project Accountant will work closely, as a project team member, with project management personnel to ensure compliance with periodic accounting submittals, such as cost and revenue forecasts, client invoices and other items. In addition, their role will be to perform various project support duties during the start up phase, ongoing operations, and close out phase of each project.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate in project chartering to gain an understanding of the project, as well as contribute accounting knowledge when needed.

  • Assist the Project Manager in developing the project budget from the final bid or estimate.

  • Facilitate internal kick-off meeting with support staff.

  • Develop and maintain positive relations with the project team and back office support personnel.

  • Assist the project management team with of all aspects of project administration from contract award through project completion. 

  • Analyze project actual, committed and planned costs on a very detailed basis to assess what the appropriate Estimate at Completion (EAC) should be on a monthly basis.

  • Assist Project Manager in the identification, assessment, and development and management of mitigation plans for project risks.

  • Assist Project Manager with planning, coordinating and administering cost tracking and client billing processes onsite. This may include day-to-day direction of onsite administrative staff in record keeping, purchasing, receiving, etc.).

  • Assist project management personnel with preparation and administration of purchase orders, and ensure compliance with purchasing procedures.

  • Assist with enforcement of company policies and procedures.

  • Assist in the development and execution of internal and external project changes.

  • Assist with detailed and well documented forecasts.

  • Assist with initial as well as updates to the cash flow forecasts.

  • Assist with document management and record retention from startup to closeout.

  • Other duties as assigned.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Understand contract clauses to help ensure the Company does not perform work outside the scope of the contract without proper authorization or entitlement.

  • Understand the potential magnitude of remaining scopes of work based on current and past performances (productivity)

  • Build and maintain meaningful, effective and integrated relationships.

  • Ability to resolve conflicts and possess good problem solving skills.

  • Ability to work well under pressure, meeting multiple and sometimes competing deadlines, at all times demonstrating cooperative behavior with colleagues, management, vendors and customers.

  • Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with a wide variety of individuals in person, via telephone and in writing.

  • Ability to work independently and resolve practical problems, keeping all appropriate parties aware of issues or risks.Have a strong work ethic.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills and ability to work well under deadlines, despite interruptions.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal (tact, diplomacy, influence, etc.) skills essential with internal and external customers and vendors.

  • Must be able to apply innovative and effective techniques to improve efficiencies and productivity.

  • Coach project personnel on administrative best practices.

  • Proficient in Microsoft applications, specifically Excel.

  • Must be a skilled businessperson who can anticipate and resolve issues before they evolve.

     

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Baccalaureate degree in accounting or related degree.

  • Minimum of 3 years project accounting experience.

  • Technical experience with integrated accounting systems.

  • Thorough understanding and ability to embrace and follow corporate and industry practices, processes, standards, etc. and their impact on project activities vital.

  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.

  • Preferred JD Edwards EnterpriseOne experience.
