Washington Corporations, headquartered in Missoula, Montana, provides central and administrative services to the Washington Companies. Washington Corporations is currently recruiting for a Corporate Contoller that will report to the Chief Financial and Administrative Officer. This position will be responsible for the overall direction and management of the accounting department. Primary responsibilities include oversight of all accounting functions, including, but not limited to the monthly and annual close process, billings to customers (shared service customers or otherwise), collection of accounts receivable, accounts payable and payroll processing and management of the monthly, quarterly and annual executive and board reporting. Washington Corporations provides shared services to a number of operating and non-operating entities with a primary focus on accounting for the other shared service departments (IT, Facilities, etc.), real estate and investment entities and operating holding companies.

The Corporate Controller will be part of team that creates and implements policies and procedures to identify, resolve and document accounting issues in addition to creating procedures to make the close and reporting process more efficient, timely and accurate. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the activities of the corporate accounting department for the accurate and timely dissemination of financial management reports including, but not limited to, internal and external monthly financial statements and annual audits and annual budgets.

  • Oversee the activities of accounts payable, ensuring the accurate and timely processing of invoices, purchase orders, petty cash, employee expense reports, cash control, payroll processing and total corporate payroll tax compliance.

  • Perform proper analytical review of the operations from a balance sheet, income statement and cash flow perspective as well as an overall business perspective.

  • Establish and maintain systems and controls that verify the integrity of all systems, processes and data, and enhance the company's value.

  • Respond to CFAO as assigned with accurate and timely work to facilitate their financial needs.

  • Participate in a wide variety of special projects and compile a variety of special reports.

  • Provide leadership and management to accounting staff assigned as direct reports and provide guidance to those direct reports who in turn oversee direct reports. Act as a critical member of the overall Washington Corporations management team in defining and setting organizational direction and culture.

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, rule, regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions.

  • Any other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proven abilities functioning as a strategic business partner and in the executive management team as well as the Board of Directors.

  • Demonstrated abilities in providing outstanding leadership, mentorship and training to a professional team.  Ability to recruit, develop and retain high caliber employees through consistent performance management.

  • A strong team player who is willing to share his/her thoughts and opinions with others as well as seeks other’s ideas and opinions when developing plans or strategies.

  • Ability to effectively communicate. Possesses outstanding oral and written communication and presentation skills. Able to effectively address any audience and engage the participants.

  • A strategic thinker who sees opportunities and anticipates challenges. Passionate, energized by the challenge in front of him/her.

  • In-depth knowledge of integrated management information systems including advanced knowledge of JD Edwards, SAP Business Intelligence or comparative systems. Ability to enhance the use of the system’s functionality within a complex environment.

  • An initiator and change agent who can lead positive change to the financial area.

  • Unquestionable personal and professional integrity, strong work ethic, positive attitude and driver of change.

  • Possesses an “open door” and approachable attitude to his/her team.

  • A problem solver, decision maker and leader in the financial function.

Education and Certification:

  • Bachelors in Business Administration, Accounting or Finance.

  • Master's degree preferred.

  • CPA Certification.


  • A minimum of 10 years experience in progressively senior management/leadership positions with proven abilities to provide analysis, advice and recommendations that support effective operational and strategic decision-making throughout the organization.

  • A track record of success as a Controller, Director of Finance, or a related function in an organization of similar size and complexity.

  • "Big Four" or national accounting firm audit experience a plus
