NBBJ’s New York office is comprised of two independent yet collaborative studios working in the Corporate/Commercial and Healthcare markets. Leadership of the studio is by Core Team. The Core Team has representative leadership in design, process/delivery and marketing; the core elements necessary for successful projects. Working together, the Core Team leads, sets goals and strategy and is responsible for the success of the studio. Internally, we refer to this as a “three-legged stool”, with each leg equally supporting the others to create a solid foundation for excellence.

Your New Role:

The Operations Leader role is a Studio Level leadership position with a primary responsibility for operational success of the studio through process and delivery. The position requires close collaboration with staff, the Studio Core Team and collegial Operations Leaders across the firm. The role entails clear communication, strategic thinking, core competencies and inspirational leadership. As Operations Leader, it is up to you and your Core Team to develop the process plan and strategies for how your group will function, excel and grow within the structure and culture of NBBJ. While the Operations Leader position relies heavily on process, your goal is to achieve optimum results in delivery, design, and communications within the Practice, the Studio and across the NBBJ network.

The New York Corporate/Commercial studio is a dynamic and collaborative environment working in both domestic and international markets.  Project Types range from Corporate Interiors fit out to ground up Commercial Mixed Use Developments domestically and abroad. The Operations Leader role is responsible for managing the process of the studio in collaboration with the Studio core team, Principals and Partners to ensure a sound business strategy and to promote a healthy and enjoyable place for innovation and growth.  The Corporate/Commercial Studio currently consists of 30 staff with projected growth to roughly 50 within the next 3 to 5 years.

Details of Your New Role:

Working closely with the other members of the Studio Core Team, your will:

  • Develop and manage the yearly Practice Plan, setting milestone and year-end goals for the group.
  • Develop and monitor strategies for success.
  • Participate in marketing and communications efforts as an ambassador for the practice and firm.
  • Participate in project Go/No Go decisions.
  • Evaluate and monitor staff work load, talent, performance,
  • Promote learning and mentorship opportunities for staff, encouraging them to reach their full potential.


As a leader in Process and Delivery you will:

  • Actively manage project work, leading by example and establishing best-practice mentorship to the team. Your chargeability to project work should typically be 80%.
  • Lead Practice and Studio efforts to improve and streamline Process and Delivery means and methods.
  • Participate in firm-wide initiatives to improve and streamline Process and Delivery means and methods.


As Operations Lead you will be responsible for:

  • Financial Performance - Studio:
    • Develop yearly Practice budget (including projected 2-3 year outlook)
    • Track chargeability and effectiveness of staff time
    • Track studio and market performance
    • Manage collections
    • Monitor and optimize practice controllable expenses
    • Monitor and review contracts.
    • Manage Staffing across Studio with input from Project Managers and Studio Leaders


  • Financial Performance - Projects:
    • Ensure rigor of Process Design for each project
    • Track project work plans
    • Track project schedules and workload
    • Track project performance
    • Work with Project Managers to identify issues and shepherd through resolution.


  • Human Performance – Our Staff
    • Manage recruitment and staff reductions for the group
    • Manage cross-studio staff sharing, including our studio in Pune’, India.


What you will need to Succeed:

  • 15+ years of experience in the practice area, with a focus in project and team management.
  • State licensed architect or Interior Design professional
  • LEED accreditation or within 18 months of hire
  • Working understanding of technology delivery tools (Revit, AutoCAD)
  • Proficiency in Management delivery tools (Deltek, MSOffice, MS Project)
