Underwriting Consultant - Commercial Lines

POSITION SUMMARY: The Underwriting Consultant serves as an Underwriting technical expert for the organization. The Underwriting Consultant guides the Underwriting Organization across a broad spectrum of property and liability underwriting issues. The Underwriting Consultant identifies solutions and processes that have a direct and measurable positive impact on achieving planned business results. The position mandates successful completion of all requirements of Underwriting School, which includes obtaining an overall passing score.
  • Model ethical behavior and execute job responsibilities in accordance with Citizens core values and ethics policies.
  • Recommend changes to the Underwriting rules and other documents that are used to standardize processes and procedures throughout the Underwriting Organization.
  • Work with Enterprise Quality Assurance and Training to ensure that company policy and procedure is both understood and followed in underwriting handling.
  • Recommend changes to policy contract wording and product features to address emerging trends.
  • Identify underwriting issues and publishes company interpretations and guidelines to the Underwriting Organization.
  • Develop and implement underwriting projects and initiatives aimed at improving financial results across a wide range of topics, for both commercial and personal lines.
  • Monitor statutory and regulatory changes impacting the Underwriting Organization and maintain strong working relationships with Citizens’ Legal, Public Affairs, Corporate Analytics, Consumer and Agency Services and Claim departments to communicate changes to the organization and recommend responses when appropriate.   
  • Assist in creating, developing, and delivering leadership level technical training material to Underwriting Management
  • Assist the underwriting trainers in the development and delivery of complex technical underwriting training. 
  • Create, distribute, monitor and maintain formal Underwriting organizational directives to assure consistent handling throughout the organization.
  • Support and advise in a consultant capacity on handling of a variety of high severity or frequent underwriting issues including but not limited to commercial, sinkhole, valuation and mitigation.
  • Partner with Citizens’ Legal Department to supply materials for both general and specific information related to Underwriting.
  • Serve as Underwritings’ Corporate Representative in depositions and provides input into discovery responses when appropriate.
  • Provide feedback on underwriting internal and external audit results and make recommendations for organizational improvements.
  • Develop and provide underwriting-related information to Executives that relates to the financial impact to the Company.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication, leadership and organizational skills.
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Outlook.
  • Strong working knowledge of multi-peril coverages and various policy types including both current and previous ISO based policies and endorsements.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial property insurance marketplace including matters of coverage, valuation assessment, legal climate and property insurance laws.
  • Mastery of property insurance principles.
  • Solid interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Risk Management or related field; OR 4 years relevant experience OR a combination of college education and experience equivalent to 4 years.
  • 5 or more years of progressively responsible commercial property Underwriting experience - 3 years of which was served in a technical advisory role. 
  • 3 or more years of experience conducting project work involving strategic initiatives or new program development in Underwriting  
  • 9 to 12 years Property & Casualty Underwriting experience
  • Experience in both personal and commercial lines.
  • Florida-specific property and casualty insurance marketplace experience.
  • CPCU designation.
This position requires the ability to sit for long periods of time, hear and converse over the telephone, and key frequently on a computer.   Ability to work in a highly energetic and flexible work environment. Position also requires occasional to frequent overnight travel.
